A Nigerian lady Mrs. Franca Nwosu who is a mother of 9 has narrated how she sponsored the university education of five of her children from the proceeds of her yam business.
The Minna, Niger State resident, who sold roasted yam along the busy Shiroro Road, explained that the business was doing well in spite of the economic downturn in the country.
Speaking to Northern City News on Thursday in Minna, Nwosu stated that she started the business about 15 years ago, noting that the trade had lifted her family above poverty.
She said
“I started this business over 15 years ago and with the proceeds, I was able to train five graduates. So, as far as I am concerned, the business is booming, no matter the hardship in the country, people must eat, you cannot avoid food.”
The trader said she opened for business by 7am everyday to serve her customers who comprised commercial motorcyclists, artisans, pedestrians and motorists.
Nwosu said that she roasted no fewer than 150 tubers of yam each day, noting, however, that the economic recession had forced her to reduce the quantity to 100 tubers.
The middle-aged woman said her husband’s meagre earnings from his welding workshop was inadequate for the family upkeep hence her decision to engage in selling roasted yam by the roadside.
She explained;
“My husband is a welder by profession but with the current situation of things in the country, what he is getting cannot sustain the family; so,  I engaged myself in the yam roasting business to support him so that our family will not suffer.”
A motorcycle operator, Samuel Edom, said he patronised Nwosu daily because her serving was affordable.
“With between N50 and N100, I can feed myself and this is far cheaper than eating at a restaurant where a plate of food would cost me between N300 and N400. Almost all the Okada riders in town have their lunch at her spot.
“I leave home early for my Okada business, so, most times, I have no other choice but to patronise the roasted yam seller because I cannot afford to go back home for a meal.”
Another motorcyclist, Abubakar Mohammed, also said that roasted yam was r cheapest food anyone could get in Minna.
He stated;
“I patronise Madam Nwosu because I can afford roasted yam compared to other foods in town. We (Okada riders) are comfortable with  her roasted yam; most of us eat there two times a day and she sometimes sold on credit to us, she is our ‘mother’ in town,”

Bejide Ifeoluwa graduated with a first class from Redeemers University
Hunger pushes several people over the edge. Some steal, others kill many destroy but Ifeoluwa’s hunger for success drove her along the long, dusty and narrow path to greatness.

“I, Bejide Ifeoluwa, the girl who sold plantain chips, who sold pepper and tomatoes, who sold fish, who swept the classrooms is now a graduate!”
With those words she received a resounding ovation from prominent Nigerians including former minister of defence – Theophilus Danjuma and the General Overseer of the Redeemed Church Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.
Ifeoluwa finished with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.93. If you ever went through the rigours to get a first class you would understand the long hours, the pain and self deprivation she had to endure consistently for 4 years.
What drove her?
According to Ifeoluwa, her story started at the first convocation of the same institution which she attended as a JSS 2 student in company of Professor L.B. kolawole who later challenged her saying, “it was a female like you who collected all those prizes, you too can do it.”

“In other to pay back a mother like this who has always been struggling for her children, I decided to not only be a first class student, but to be the best”, she said.
Speaking on the perceived limitation faced by most people from less privileged backgrounds, Ifeoluwa says God blesses those who dream and add hardwork to it.
“I always said to myself, I am not the first person to come from a less privileged home. If Daddy G.O (pastor E.A. Adeboye) could make it, why can’t I? If so many of the professors here who had poor backgrounds could make it, why should I not?”
The Nigerian graduate empowerment scheme, N-Power has issued a statement on the results of its assessment tests for the 2017 intake.

“For those who wrote the 2017 application assessment tests, please note that NO names have been released”, it said.

The N-Power online assessment test was held between July 1 and August 31. Applicants wrote the test in four categories – Tax, Health, Agro and Teach.

Two high school pupils’ excitement at a marriage proposal on the school grounds captured on video has been cut short.

Mduduzi Tlou, 18, proposed to his 16-year-old girlfriend (whose name is withheld because she is underage) at Tholulwazi Secondary School in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, last week, with the video going viral on social media.

But a few hours after the two got “engaged” in front of cheering fellow pupils, the school confiscated a R2000 ring Tlou had bought for his girlfriend and suspended both pupils.
The pupils yesterday appeared before a school disciplinary hearing.
Tlou told Sowetan that they had been dating for eight months. He said he wanted to marry her because she had “changed” his life.
“I love her because when I met her, I was an alcoholic and she had changed all of that.
The Grade 11 pupil said marriage, however, was not on the cards for another two years.
“I paid R2000 for the ring. I bought it from Sterns. I had saved money for it,” Tlou said.
He said he did not know the proposal was against school policy. “I was surprised on September 18 just after lunch when they called us into the principal’s office, confiscated the ring and asked us to bring our parents the next day.”

Tlou said he was worried that he was missing out on learning while on suspension. He has already missed four class tests. He wants to finish his studies, find a job and marry his sweetheart.
The girlfriend said she, too, was worried that she was missing out on her schooling.
“When they took my ring at school, I wanted to cry. He asked me to marry him and make him the happiest man on earth. We are not going to get married now. We will get married after we both finish school,” she said.
The couple’s parents said they were elated by the proposal, however, they were worried by the pupils’ suspension.
Tlou’s grandfather Jacob Xaba said:
“Why is this relationship being turned into a crime? He must marry her. I will even give him my savings for lobola.”
The girl’s mother, Nomsa, said: “I am happy with the step these children are taking. Mduduzi is a good boy. I can’t think of a better son-in-law.”
Gauteng education spokesman Steve Mabona said the pupils acted indecently by kissing and touching in front of their schoolmates.
“. Surely such behaviour will not be tolerated in our schooling environment. A school is an institution of learning . The disciplinary process by the SGB . will pave a way forward.”
The pupils would be given a chance to write the tests missed, he said.

An Instagram user shared a love letter he saw a 12-year old write to a girl and it’s quickly going viral online.
“This is what i saw Ola writing, Ola is just 12 years old”, Atunbi, the user, who was clearly surprised by what was written in the letter wrote on Instagram.
“I don’t know if i should call him smart or be afraid for his parents”, he wrote.
The 12-year old started off his letter writing; “If God were [to] bring me flowers, I know it would have been you. In your eyes so tender and soft, love has a new meaning” .
He continued, “Love is pure, love is sweet poison that doctor can’t cure  i have swallowed your poison.. Kissing your lips made my eyes see a thousand red star you are like sunshine, so warm, you are like sugar, so sweet, you are like you, and that is why i love you.”
The letter written by 12-year-old ‘Raheem’ seemed like a apology to a girl named ‘Oke’.
The letter is causing quite a reaction on social media, with some saying it’s only normal as we all wrote love letters when we were young too.
Read the full letter below:

Here’s a full text of what was written in the letter:
“If God were [to] bring me flowers, I know it would have been you. In your eyes so tender and soft, love has a new meaning. Kissing your lips made my eyes see a thousand red star you are like sunshine, so warm, you are like sugar, so sweet, you are like you, and that is why i love you.
“I love you, want to know why? Because you are my air, without you there will be no me. My love for you grows everyday in each and everyway. It [grows] when you look at me, When you say my name, and most of all grow when you say ‘I love you’.
“Don’t be angry about this letter, i am just trying to apologize. Each time i remember the good time we spend together the love we share, the misunderstanding we have is worthless. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said it would demand for the records of Ordinary and Advanced Level results of candidates recommended by tertiary institutions before offering them admission.
JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede said this during this year’s meeting on admissions exercise/processes for Innovative Enterprise Institutions in Abuja on Tuesday.
The registrar said that institutions must maintain the standard set by the board beginning from this year’s admission.
”From this year now, we are demanding records of the O levels of the candidates you are admitting and that is for the first time,” Mr. Oloyede said.

“When you recommend a person for admission we want to see what qualification he or she possesses not just you telling me that he or she scored 300 in UTME. What of the real qualification?” he said.
He said the board would stop the ”regularisation of all forms of illegal admissions conducted by tertiary institutions from this year.”
“Any admission ‘done under the table’ would not be regularised. Candidates and tertiary institutions must desist from engaging in any form of illegal admission. Illegal admission in terms of people not even taking the unified tertiary matriculation examination, UTME at all not to talk of scoring zero. Illegal admission by even admitting people who do not have the requisite ordinary level (O level) because before now JAMB does not have the record of their O level (results).”
The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, JAMB, is a Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions. The board conducts entrance examinations for prospective undergraduates into Nigerian universities. The board is also charged with the responsibility of administering similar examinations for applicants to Nigerian public and private monotechnics, polytechnics and colleges of educations.
